Does depression keep you down?

Depression is a major disrupter to life. It causes loss of energy and motivation, decrease or increase in appetite, sleep disruption, feelings of hopelessness and/or irritability, negative self talk and self esteem and distractibilty. These symptoms cause people to withdraw, feel shame, and feeling that there is no way out of the cycle of depression.

Because of the tendency to isolate with depression, reaching out to someone for help is often the first step. As with most mental health issues, thought and belief patterns will need to be examined, to gain insight into how you are perpetuating the depression. There are skills to learn how to stay present which increases a sense of safety and serenity. And often changes in daily routines need to be looked at help increase energy and motivation that is necessary for ongoing treatment of depression.

You see depression is not a one sided issue; there are multiple facets to it. We are mental, emotional, physical and spiritual beings and it all needs to be looked at.
